Lessons of Chile : reform or revolution?
The recent death of Augusto Pinochet marks the passing of one of the 20 th century's most ruthless tyrants. In 1973 he launched a military coup against the democratically elected Chilean government led by Salvador Allende. Claiming that Chile was under threat from so called ‘communist subversives' his military death squads proceeded to massacre thousands of socialists and trade unionists, with tens of thousands more tortured. In 1974 Pinochet declared himself president and was to remain in power until 1990, with the full support of the United States and Britain .
