Campaigning work of Swedish section of REVOLUTION, September 2008
Between 17 and 21 September, the fifth edition of the European Social Forum (ESF) was held in the city of Malmö in the Swedish south. Gathered were political parties, trade union activists, women organizations, an abundance of left wing groups, depoliticized NGOs, environmentalists, etc. All in all the forum gathered far less than expected and we see a negative develepement towards a forum for "the already convinced". REVOLUTION Sweden together with comrades from other parts of Europe and together with some other organisations arranged and hosted a meeting about how to fight racism and smash fascism. Unfortunately the forum as a whole lacked a platform for democratic debate and decision about the way to actually unite our forces and challenge the capitalists. How do we transform the milk-and-water slogan "Another Europe is possible" into concrete action for social change? Suitably enough for the capitalists and the trade union bureaucracy, the question remained unanswered, leaving the forum with something of a leftist festival character rather than a real matter for the working class and the poor and oppressed. Shortly after the event Revolution Sweden published an article characterizing ESF in Malmö as a neglected possibility. Read it here: http://revolutionsweden.wordpress.com/2008/09/26/europas-sociala-forum-i...
During the period we have also released a new issue of our magazine, covering issues such as proletarian internationalism and anti-sexism and first hand stories of police brutality and trade union activism. Read it here: http://revolutionsweden.wordpress.com/2008/09/04/hostnumret-ar-fardigt/
We have also taken an even more active role in the building of the Network against Racism in Stockholm, arguing for the importance of creating local groups in the working class suburbs.
During an economic recession such as the present, the flaws of capitalism becomes clearer then ever to both students without rich parents and to working class and unemployed youth. REVOLUTION Sweden will fight to channel their reactions into constructive action. Sörj inte - agera! [Don't grieve - act!]
